“Take Five” for WSU: Alumni Advocacy – it really is all about YOU

butch with heart

Welcome to the sixth entry in our “Take Five” Initiative, which provides weekly tips, suggestions, examples, and the tools so you can take five minutes and be an advocate for higher education and WSU. This week we feature you and the important role WSU alumni play in the university. WSU Impact applauds you, your degree, and support of WSUAA, the university, and advocacy on behalf of WSU and higher education.

The success of the Washington State University crimson license plate has dramatically increased scholarship awards for the 2013 academic year. The over 17,000 Cougs who own the plates (more than all other collegiate plates in the state combined) have helped generate nearly $500,000 in scholarship support for WSU students.

WSU Alumni Association is an amazingly effective organization. Recently, WSUAA listed its top ten accomplishments over the last ten years. WSUAA has doubled membership, invested $17.8 million in WSU, launched the very popular Crimson license plate supporting WSU student scholarships, boasts the highest staff productivity in the PAC-12, and helps organize over 500 alumni events to engage WSUAA members. In addition, WSUAA launched WSU Impact in 2012, making it easy for alumni and friends to advocate for WSU and higher education.

It is not surprising that WSUAA created WSU Impact, a growingly popular way for alumni to support their alma mater.  After all, WSUAA members are:

  • some of WSU’s most loyal supporters
  • some of WSU’s greatest assets – alumni are the most direct, visible products of a university
  • invaluable evidence that a college education matters and makes a difference
  • great role models for current and future students in how to support an institution
  • well positioned to engage legislators through WSU Impact, to let them know how you are using your degree(s) and how WSU, as a land-grant institution, is helping the community you live in or the business you work in
  • the best WSU ambassadors by sharing the value of WSU to your communities, professional and social networks, and thanks to WSU Impact, with your legislators

WSU Impact’s goal is to provide you with the information and tools you need to make it easy to share constructive messages with your legislators. We strive to make the process convenient, seamless in its ease, the content relevant, and the information current.

Alumni voices are needed. WSU alumni illustrate the impact the university has on the economy and workforce as well as your family and community. As alumni, you have a vested interest in promoting WSU because with legislative support, WSU can continue to improve academic programming, increase the quality of research, raise the profile of our university, and ensure the value of a WSU degree. WSU Impact keeps Cougs informed of WSU’s achievements in education, research, and outreach. We want you to be part of WSU’s future, not just its past. The future of WSU depends on reinvestment in state support of public universities and in turn, state support depends on citizens like you letting legislators know what you value. As alumni, you have a distinct voice. Your stories about your passion for WSU and what you are doing with your WSU degree(s) can be particularly compelling to legislators. WSU alumni sending personal messages via the WSU Impact‘s advocacy tools keeps our university at the top of every legislator radar screen – and in a positive way.

WSU Impact wants to continue growing our registered members. We are currently 960 strong – we are working to be 1500 powerful by the end of 2014. For those WSUAA members and  alumni who have not joined yet, please do by clicking here. For those who have already registered, click here or on the icon below to  take action.

Finally, visit www.wsuimpact.dev often – we are constantly updating our site, providing you with current information, sharing stories that will inspire you about your university, and offering tips and ideas that will make you an informed, effective WSU alumni advocate.  It really is all about you – Cougs are the university’s “best in the west” asset.
