WSU’s medical bill makes progress

Olympia, WA

The House Appropriations Committee tonight – February 27th –  gave the WSU medical school bill a “do pass” recommendation, sending it to the Rules Committee where it will await a vote of the full House of Representatives. House Bill 1559 passed out on a 24-9 vote, and on a bipartisan basis. As we reported, the Senate version of the bill passed out of the Senate Ways & Means Committee on a 21-0 vote earlier this week. It is now awaiting a floor vote in the upper chamber. Today was the deadline for bills to be moved out of the budget committees.

We thank every one of the WSU Impact registered members who went online, used the tools, and connected with your legislators. As the bills move forward to the Rules Committees, we will need every one of our supporters to continue to raise your voice in support of expanding medical education opportunities. The two companion bills remain a high priority for WSU, and the institution is ready to seek accreditation for a new medical school.

With a need in our state to increase the number of practicing physicians, it is rewarding to know that the majority of lawmakers agree that providing additional opportunities for more Washingtonians to pursue medical education is important to the state. Additionally, collaborative health care research in both the greater Puget Sound and Spokane will lead to cures for illness, promote health for wellness, and create innovations in health care delivery and new discoveries in science here in the state of Washington.

Thank you again. Let’s keep the momentum going. If you haven’t joined WSU Impact, please do so by clicking here. Together, Cougar Nation will continue to be the best in the west by supporting WSU the best we can, speaking up when it counts.
